900 jobs face axe, claims AWE union

December 18, 2009

Union bosses fear job losses at an atomic weapons factory could be as many as 900.

Bob King of Prospect, the defence workers’ union, said documents circulating at AWE plc in Aldermaston and Burghfield mention cuts of up to 15 per cent – anything from 400 to 900 – from the 6,000 workforce.

Mr King said one of the documents was the chief executive’s briefing.

He said: “At the moment they are saying there are no plans for any further redundancies, but I think our information is good and they will announce more job cuts in January or February.”

But AWE says the redundancy figure being considered was 50.

AWE spokeswoman Rachel Whybrow said: “AWE is currently carrying out a review of the ways in which the company’s assets and skills can be used most effectively to meet programme requirements.

“At this stage, the review has identified a requirement for about 50 redundancies from within a range of corporate support functions and activities. Consultation is continuing with the trade unions.

“While the review is still taking place it is not possible to speculate on the scale of any further redundancies that may prove necessary.”
