Jobless figure falls – by four

July 17, 2009

Unemployment in Reading has fallen fractionally for the first time since the economic downturn began.

The borough’s jobless figure now stands at 4,184, down by just four from 4,188 in June.

This means 4.3 per cent of the borough’s working age population are claiming unemployment benefit.

There is similar good news in Wokingham, which has 1,997 people on the jobless roll, 23 fewer than last month, while in West Berkshire unemployment fell by 43 from 2,402 to 2,359.

But South Oxfordshire saw the most dramatic fall in the region, down 103 to 1,543.

The region still bucks the national claimant count, which rose to 1.56million.

Last month Reading’s council leaders and company bosses pledged to work together to help businesses battle the recession at an Economic Slowdown Summit.

Council leader Jo Lovelock said: “We have to be hopeful that unemployment is bottoming out, though one month doesn’t guarantee that.”
