Store offers job help to disabled

May 28, 2009

An employment charity has opened a shop in West Reading to help disabled people get back to work.

The Shaw Trust has launched a fundraising retail shop and employment office at the Tesco superstore on Oxford Road.

The charity hopes sales from donations of clothes, bric-a-brac and accessories will help its campaign to help disadvantaged people make the break from benefits to work.

“It’s a perfect combination for us, because it means shoppers can see exactly how the money they spend helps clients, and in our employment office visitors can also browse for bargains,” said Shaw Trust commercial director Nick Mason.

Area employment manager Linda Fox said: “It’s also a bonus for us because the high profile presence is spreading the word about how we can help local people and employers.

“We’ve already seen an upswing in enquiries.”

The Shaw Trust has already supported 38,000 people into jobs nationally under the New Deal for Disabled People Job Broking programme, and has struck a service agreement with Tesco to help people back to work. The new store is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
