Reading well placed to fight recession

By Paul Robins
January 26, 2009

Reading is entering the recession in a stronger position than almost anywhere else in the UK, according to new research.

The town has been identified as a beacon of growth which is better placed to weather the economic storm than other areas in a new study by research group Centre for Cities.

Reading was pinpointed as Britain’s most prosperous place outside London and the second least deprived area behind Aldershot. It also has the fifth highest level of employment.

The report gave Reading a ‘green’ rating – meaning it is least likely to feel the effects of the economic downturn than other areas.

Oxford and Cambridge were also singled out as being in a stronger position than the likes of Liverpool, Wigan and Hull, which were placed on ‘red’ alert for being most exposed to the fiscal conditions because of high unemployment levels.

Cities on ‘amber’ included Bristol, London and Edinburgh, which all had skilled populations but were exposed to vulnerable financial services.

Bill Gornall-King, president of Reading Chamber of Commerce, was not surprised the town figured so well.

“This is welcome news but it is not a huge surprise,” he said. “I have said before that Reading is the jewel of the Thames Valley in economic terms and one of the best performing towns in the country, and this report underlines this. It shows that there are a lot of good things happening in the town.”

And Mr Gornall-King believes Reading’s strong economic growth is due to more than just its thriving IT industry.

“Economists always point towards Reading’s strong talent pool being predominantly ICT-based but this proves there is so much more to the local economy than that,” he said.

“Reading has a large number of highly skilled graduates in its workforce across the sectors and is home to many of the biggest companies in the world.

“It is leading the way economically but we must be wary that hard work is needed to ensure it stays this way.”

And the figures will come as little surprise to the governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, who hailed Reading as having one of the best local economies in Europe during a recent visit to the town.

Mr King praised the town’s economic diversity, labelling it a “business hotspot” and describing its economic revival as a “real success story.”

Dermot Finch, director of the Centre for Cities, said: “Each city needs its own front-line action plan to keep jobs and retrain workers.”

The Report is not about Reading the town, but the 'Reading Urban area' which stretches to the borders of High Wycombe and incorporates very prosperous areas. The following is a comment from the report's authors to qualify their position.

"Throughout the report we use the DCLG definition for primary urban areas (PUA), as used in their State of the Cities databse. We have therefore defined Reading primary urban area as Reading, Bracknell Forest and Wokingham. For a map of this area, please see http://www.socd.communities.gov.uk/socd/RptViewer.aspx?Place=8485"

The town of Reading forms a very small portion of the sample and cannot therefore be read as indicative of our position. Indeed, Reading is characterised in many specific reports as having areas of significant social deprivation.

I hope this explains why the people of the town who have commented thus far, have a view which is not demonstrated in the report.

Unfortunately, the Council often use the results of the urban area to mask their failings and to give what I consider a false perspective of the town's economic performance.

What Reading needs is ridding itself of Labour. The Labour run admin lies, decieves and cheats the public.Whoever made this report needs to get the facts together the true facts before issueing rubbish reports like this.In Reading a common cliche is in place you speak in favour of Labour you get what you want, you speak against Labour you are destroyed.Labour touts are everywhere in every community.False reports, false figures, false promises is a disease in less developed countries (third WORLD)but it seems that disease has spreaded into Reading.

My Partner got made redundant March 08, from one of the towns biggest employers. He has not been able to get any steady work since. If Reading is so well placed to weather the economic storm prehaps the people that came up with this report could give my partner a job or let him know where to look?

The writer is misleading people, there are more people claiming housing benefit, because the majority of businesses in reading are only paying a minimum wage, short term contracts. What is a living wage. Can anybody tell me, nobody can live on the minimum wage bringing up a family. If you live with your parents then you can just survive on a minimum wage. Reading borough council only pay a minimum wage for our professional street cleaners who do a remarkable job. No doubt there are only contract workers from an agency. If reading is so busy let's have a list of all the firms who only pay a minimum wage to their workers. I challenge the reading post to print all businesses who only pay a minimum wage no sick pay or holiday pay short term contracts. This is why reading is booming.
