Microsoft to axe 5,000 jobs
By Paul RobinsJanuary 22, 2009
Microsoft has today announced it is to axe 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months.
The news comes after the computer giant reported an 11 per cent drop in second-quarter profits.
The 2,000 employees who work at the firm’s UK head offices at Thames Valley Park are believed to be among those at threat.
The company blamed the move - which will be the first large-scale redundancies in its 32-year history – on declining sales resulting from the weakening PC market.
Microsoft said the job cuts will reduce operating costs by 1.5 billion dollars as it prepares for lower revenue and earnings in the second half of the year.
