Generations of actors keep York Nativity alive

Fathers and sons, sisters and brothers have proved the show must go on over 54 years of the York Nativity Play at Aldermaston.

Directed throughout that time by Pat Eastop, the play is now a village tradition staged every Christmas in St Mary the Virgin Church.

The players use a modern version of the 14th century York mystery cycle written by E Martin-Browne.

Absent this year was Janice Macdonald who has played the First Maid for more than 20 years and looked after the acolytes – the only children in the play.

This year she was unable to take part because she is now a member of the church ministry team.

Leslie Woodley from Calcot has been playing the Third Shepherd for 44 years – a role he took over from his father.

His brother Barry and sister Jenny and other members of the family have also played roles over the years.

Nick Caiger-Smith from London inherited the role of the First King from his father Alan, but now plays Joseph.

The unaccompanied singing is led by Peter Denny.

The plays run until Sunday.
