One woman show

8/ 3/2007

Punjabi actress Anjali Mya Chadha brings her “exotic take” on English wedding rituals to Maidenhead’s Norden Farm Centre for the Arts this weekend.

In her one-woman show The Dateless Wonder, she brings to life a whole raft of characters including her bewildered heroine Jo Jo.

The show is firmly based on her own observations as a guest at a friend’s wedding.

“I felt there was really good material here for a solo show,” she told me.

Though English-born, Anjali has appeared on TV in series like Little Britain and is a regular guest panellist on the BBC’s Asian network.

The Dateless Wonder marks her professional stage debut.

She studied theatre at Liverpool University but now lives in London.

During the process of devising her show she grew rather attached to Jo Jo.

She said: “If people take to her I may bring her back for future projects.”

Though currently working alone, she hopes one day to have a company of her own.

“But my aim is always to tell good stories,” she said.

She is a great admirer of writer-performer Victoria Wood and thinks that the cult movie Muriel's Wedding may have sown the seed of The Dateless Wonder.

Lucy Taylor directs the touring production, which has a  one-off performance at Norden Farm on Saturday.

The play is performed mostly in English with some Punjabi.
