LAST Thursday evening I battled with road works and the ensuing traffic outside The Peacocks to watch Lerner and Loewe’s production of My Fair Lady at the New Victoria Theatre, Woking.
My Fair Lady is an adaption of George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion and opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, New York, on March 15, 1956. This latest touring production celebrates its 50th anniversary and no expense has been spared with the cast or the production.
My Fair Lady is set in London and the audience is introduced to the strong-willed Eliza Doolittle, a grubby young woman with a strong cockney accent. Professor Henry Higgins encounters Eliza selling flowers and boasts to his friend Colonel Hugh Pickering that he can tell where people originate from by their accents.
