FOOTIE COMEDY HAS A KICK AT THE FINAL WHISTLE

13/ 5/2004

Monica and her football crazy husband Bill, a publisher, have agreed to try to rekindle the flames of their failing marriage in Majorca with the help of plenty of sun, sea and sangria.

Also present is Bill’s best friend Ian, who has picked up — in a Benny Hill karaoke bar — a German tourist rep called Brigitta.

Then, out of the blue Dan, a travel writer and client of Bill’s but, more importantly, Monica’s secret lover, makes an appearance.

It is the night of the ill-fated 1990 World Cup semi-final when England played Germany and the men settle down to watch it on the hotel’s TV.

They look to England’s golden boy Gary Lineker as the god to send them to glory whereas Monica sees Gary as the white knight who will rescue her from her morass of marital problems and Brigitta just sees him as the enemy.

Through 90 minutes, extra-time and the infamous penalty shoot-out the field of battle switches between hotel room and football pitch as Monica, Bill and the England football team approach the inevitable.

The jokes come thick and fast with a surprise finale in this winning comedy.
