COLLECTION OF SHORT PLAYS EARN CATS A HIGH FIVE by Kim Halliday

7/ 4/2004

Confusions brings together five short, interlinked plays, each involving characters we have all met or recognise in daily life.

Some have sad stories to tell and others are quite comical, like the mother in Mother Figure, who treats her neighbours like children when they come to visit.

Or there’s Harry in Drinking Companion, who starts out a respectable travelling salesman, has a few drinks in a hotel bar and ends up a sad and desperate letch.

In Between Mouthfuls we observe two couples in a restaurant comically linked by infidelity — each couple arguing, and unaware of the presence of the other couple.

In Gosforth’s Fête we see the comic goings-on behind a village’s annual fête.

The final play, A Talk in the Park, is a humorous view of life observed by five completely different individuals on a park bench.

The cast, crew and production team of CATS produced an excellent performance of this sometimes very wordy script.

Worthy of special mention in this evening’s presentation are Sarah Hill for her superb comic interpretation of the neighbour in Mother Figure; Ian Maclachlan for his wonderful portrayal of Harry getting drunk (very convincingly!) in Drinking Companion; Nigel Willetts for his wickedly over-the-top performance as fête organiser Gordon Gosforth in Gosforth’s Fête; and Caroline Prince-Wright for her suitably pompous and perfect characterisation of Mrs Pearce in both Between Mouthfuls and Gosforth’s Fête.

CATS’s chairman Angela Chitty made a wonderful cameo appearance as the man- and dog-obsessed weirdo in A Talk in the Park, complete with headscarf, baggy fleece, floral skirt, black socks and absolutely no sense of decorum — a sight to behold!

The staging and scenery was simple and effective and scene changes were meticulously planned and executed.

A good performance all round from a very talented group, resulting in a superb evening’s entertainment for the audience.
