Billy Smart's Circus in Reading today
March 06, 2013
Get ready for some high-flying fun because the circus has arrived!
The world-famous Billy Smart’s Circus has pitched its tent in Reading ready for five days of fun under the big top.
Alex the Fireman will climb a flaming ladder, The Cretzu Troupe will somersault into the air from springboards and Angelo the clown will be making audiences double-up with laughter.
All the fun of the fair will be packed into the big top – but Billy Smart has given his circus a modern touch, with the comforts of a traditional theatre (including heating) to keep audiences warm and cosy during the show.
The circus became one of Europe’s top attractions when it was founded by Billy in 1946.
The showman had dreams of creating a world-famous funfair and after buying a big top he added circus performers as an extra attraction.
Over the next 25 years the circus built a solid reputation, touring around Europe and starring in television programmes, including a show broadcast from Windsor Great Park in honour of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
In the 80s the circus began to wind down and the owners auctioned off some of the circus equipment. The big top shut its door and remained closed for a decade.
But the fans called for it to return and acrobats got back into the swing of things in the 90s.
Billy Smart’s has since been performing one-off shows around Europe but this year sees a full UK tour which promises more thrills and spills than ever before.
One of the show’s star acts is the fantastic hand balancing Desiree, who supports her entire body weight on her hands and fires a bow and arrow using only her feet.
The Flying Aces also perform, taking audiences’ breath away as they swing through the air from trapezes. The group trained together at the Trix trapeze school on Australia’s Gold Coast and have mastered the art of somersaulting from a swing and flying 13 metres into the arms of a catcher.
Jugglers, aerial dancers and clowns complete the troupe to create a dazzling band of daredevil performers who put on a night of top circus entertainment.
Billy Smart’s Circus is at King’s Meadow, Reading from today until Sunday.
There are two performances from Wednesday to Friday at 4.45pm and 7.30pm, three on Saturday at 2pm, 4.45pm and 7.30pm, and two on Sunday at 12.30pm and 3.30pm. Tickets are £10.
