Bank Gallery comes to Wokingham

A CLAN of artists who have been forced by the economic climate to take their work online and outdoors will be bringing their masterpieces to Wokingham next month.

The work of 14 artists belonging to a co-operative will be showcasing their work at the More Arts gallery in Peach Street between Wednesday, October 12, and Saturday, November 5.

The Bank Gallery, as the group is known, had been displaying work at a contemporary art gallery in Chobham, Surrey

However, the current economic climate has forced the closure of the venue and has resulted in members now taking their work on to the internet and events across the country.

One of the founder members of the co-operative is Lesley Melia, who is from Bracknell.

She said: “Sadly, because of the economic climate, the gallery had to close, but by then we had a good reputation and following with a number of excellent artists and it seemed a pity to let all the hard work go.

“A decision was made to create an online gallery and take our artists out to a variety of venues.”

A wide range of work will be going on display in Wokingham including jewellery, painting, photography, ceramics and sculpture work. Among those exhibiting at the gallery will be local jeweller Janet Richardson.

She said: “Being part of an artist’s cooperative is exciting and potentially very rewarding.

“The support between the members in sharing the costs and work of mounting exhibitions will be invaluable.”

She will be joined at the display by Wokingham resident and painter Jayne Leighton Herd.

She added: “With all the members working together in finding exhibition spaces it could give us tremendous opportunities to exhibit in venues across the UK.”

The exhibition will be open from  Wednesdays to Saturdays between 10am and 4pm.

A pity that the many people who work on Saturdays (and Wednesdays) won't have an opportunity so attend.
