Search is on for talent show judges

By Mike Pyle
June 17, 2011

Can you tell the talented from the talentless? Could you look an aspiring pop star in the eyes and tell them they do not have what it takes?

If so, and you have some knowledge of the entertainment industry, you could be in with a chance of judging this year’s Has Reading Got Talent? competition.

Organisers of the contest, which attracted 250,000 people – including scouts from ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent – to the Broad Street Mall last year, are looking for people with backgrounds in music, dance, drama and other arts to judge the contest.

Successful applicants could find themselves sitting alongside Reading-based X Factor runner-up Danyl Johnson and Royals chairman Sir John Madejski on the panel.

Organiser Steve Fawke, the mall’s manager, said: “We’re looking for people from the industry to come down with an open mind.

“They will see all sorts – from a two-year-old singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to top-class acts who could win the competition.

“We will need them to be committed, willing to be able to give up time to do the auditions and we also want them to be able to give advice and constructive criticism to the auditionees – that’s why we want people from the industry.

“They can be the principal of a dance group, a musician, a music technician – anything involved with the industry.”

The auditions run for seven consecutive days from Wednesday, August 10, from 10am to 6pm each day. Mr Fawke wants judges for each day plus the semi-finals on Thursday, August 18, and the final on Saturday, August 20.

Judges will not need to be present for every audition but must be free for the whole day on whichever days they are able to do.

Has Reading Got Talent? is in its fourth year and has grown bigger and bigger – 25,000 people visited the Broad Street Mall on every day of the last year’s event, which was won by dancers Vanquish.

Mr Fawke added: “It’s obvious the contest does generate a lot of interest.

“Last year we were aware researchers from Britain’s Got Talent were at the shows and last year’s winners were invited on to Britain’s Got Talent.

“Has Reading Got Talent? is becoming a well-respected competition.”

Potential judges can apply to the Reading Post/getreading with a 250-word passage explaining three reasons why they would be ideally suited to be a judge.

Entries can be sent to michaelpyle@trinitysouth.co.uk.

Any application over 250 words will be dismissed.

Looking for a judge who knows his stuff, look no further than Dave Savage of Reading's very own Starmaker Theatre Company!!

   Lol @ Spiddly & HughJ.

I think all of us GR commentators could be judged as "unsuitable" to provide a fair and balanced view in this realm !

If it were otherwise, we wouldn't have a Danyl at all ! :)

Will Little T be making an appearance? Did anyone see him on Britain's Got Talent? I don't watch it, but I didn't see anything on here saying his audition was shown. I wonder why?

Spiddly and Nimrod to take it in turns being the meat in the Madejski Johnson sandwich, no knee torture please. Failing that, isn’t that Cheryl lady available to fill in, or even Deborah Edwards?

Why not get Judge Reddihough to sit in?

That way everyone can go through to the finals.

And how will the judges be judged? And who judges the judges judging the judges? And, for that matter, who judges the judges judging the judging the judges judging the judges? Ooh, my head's spinning. Shall I stop now?

I'll do it, although going by what Ive seen previously it's very unlikely there will be anybody that gets through the first round.
