Soweto Gospel Choir launch Black History Month

September 28, 2009

Hip hop theatre shows, a children's Gospel choir and a steel band are just some of the line-up for this year's Black History Month.

The month starts with a performance by the two-time Grammy award winning Soweto Gospel Choir. They will be performing at The Hexagon on Wednesday 30 September at 7.30pm.

Other highlights include:

- Bollywood Dance Classes
- African Drumming Workshop
- The Reading Dushera Festival
- Caribbean Food Event
- Reading International Festival
- The Luton Children's Gospel Choir
- Pan Fever with the RASPO Steel Orchestra
- The Arthur Wharton Memorial Football Tournament

Black History Month was established in the United States by Dr Carter G Woodson, a black American historian who created a month for African American people to have the chance to celebrate and acknowledge themselves and their achievements.

In England, Black History Month was first celebrated in October 1987, African Jubilee year, as part of a drive to improve racial harmony in London. It now covers the whole country and recognises and embraces the contributions and traditions of other black communities.

Bet Tickner, Reading's Lead Councillor for Communities and Neighbourhooods, said: "This year, Reading Black History Month provides a first-rate show from the Soweto Gospel Choir, plus a programme that anyone and everyone among all Reading's communities can take part in and enjoy.'

Nothing although you have a "white history" month every day of the week, Black History month is about highlighting the history of people of african descent around the world, history that you won't find in most european / uk history books / classes.

Will there be a white history month? No, because that would be racist....
