Chas & Dave at Sub89
January 31, 2013
It's usually home to heavy rock bands or dubstep DJs but Sub89 will be welcoming a rather different act to the stage this spring.
Rockney pioneers Chas & Dave will have audiences bopping around the club with their blend of music-hall humour and sing-a-long hits.
The musical duo, who formed in the mid-1970s, are embarking on a mammoth UK tour, with Reading as their fourth date on the road.
After making music for 40 years Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock are tour veterans and they have also become festival favourites in recent years, playing Glastonbury in 2005 and 2007, and Bestival in 2012.
In the 70s they leapt on to the music scene with hits like Gertcha, The Sideboard Song, Rabbit and Ain’t No Pleasing You, which reflected their love of all things English.
Using their broad London accents the duo created a uniquely British sound that won legions of fans. Their debut album One Fing ‘n’ Anuvver was released in 1975 and had a strong North London angle with songs like Ponders End Allotments Club.
The band also recorded theme tunes for TV shows like CrackerJack, but contrary to popular belief they were not the musicians behind the Only Fools and Horses theme tune – they had to turn down the opportunity because they were too busy.
In 2009 it was announced the pair would no longer be working together as Dave planned to retire following the death of his wife Sue. But he couldn’t keep away for long and the band embarked on another tour in 2011.
Their latest tour will see them playing all their classic hits and getting everyone dancing to their rockney tunes.
Chas & Dave are at Sub89 on Sunday, March 3 - visit www.sub89.com and at the Wycombe Swan in High Wycome on Wednesday, March 20.
