Mumford and Sons at Shepherds Bush Empire

By Jenny Minard
March 17, 2010

Mumford and Sons, Shepherds Bush Empire, Sunday, March 14

Mumford and Sons are amazing. The End!

Only kidding. Although after Sunday’s performance, amazing just about sums it up.

The band shot to instant fame upon the release of their debut album Sigh No More after being championed by Radio 1’s Zane Low who described them as the “hottest act on earth”.

And hot they were – women drooled at the feet of the four-piece. The crowd held no shame in showing the band exactly what they thought of them.

The cheers were deafening – “we love you Marcus” girls screamed to lead singer Mr Mumford. It was more reminiscent of a Take That concert than an underground folk night.

The band treated fans to every song from the album and threw in a couple of new tracks to delight the masses.

You could hear a pin drop as they sank into Timshel – the haunting harmonies and saccharine sound not only drew tears to the eyes, but rolling down the cheeks.

Awake My Soul and Thistle and Weeds were real stompers – but it was single Little Lion Man which really got the crowd going. An irish jig of a song, set up perfectly for St Patrick’s Day.

The band, formed in 2007, were clearly humbled by the sight before them, men and women singing every single word of every song.

Having played Glastonbury in June – they also sold out London’s Luminaire in July, just six months after Marcus, Country, Ben and Ted got together. Their London ICA show sold out in 24 hours.

Mumford and Sons are truly magic – and having seen them live I can truly say my life is now complete.

Their third single, The Cave is out now.
