Call for handbell ringers

March 12, 2010

Donations are needed to help a team of handbell enthusiasts ring in young people to the hobby.

Finchampstead Handbell Ringers is trying to raise £2,750 to offer more opportunities to young people to get involved in handbell ringing.

It hopes the initiative will help create awareness and build self-esteem among young people, but needs donations to fund the activites for junior members.

Handbell ringing embraces a wide range of music, including classic and pop, and can bring new confidence to young people.

Meg Hostler, team leader of Finchampstead Handbell Ringers, said: “Whilst the concept of handbell ringing is primarily about creating music, it also provides an outlet for more social interaction and a positive environment for people to learn.

“There is also the opportunity for parents to join in and support their children through a range of performances we give to schools, Scouting and Guiding movements and senior citizen groups.

“We believe we help to enrich the lives of others and make a real difference in the community.”

The group is seeking to raise the funds through www.localgiving.com.

Donations will help to fund the hire of community centres for practices and performances.

The group was formed in September 2005 and practises twice a week at St James’ Church in Finchampstead. It performs at schools and local care homes throughout the year.

I can't understand why it costs your team so much to keep going. The team I belong to does everything for charity, accepting donations only when they are offered - we wouldn't dream of asking for donations, nor would we ever consider applying for a Children in Need grant when there are many support groups for physically and mentally disabled children who have had their applications turned down. Whatever happened to playing for fun and sharing with others, instead of taking!
