A festive hit with Pete and the Pirates

By Jenny Minard
December 02, 2009

It will be a spectacular festive homecoming for Reading favourites Pete and the Pirates as they announce a Christmas shindig gig.

The band – ‘poised to be the indie darlings of 2010’ according to Time Out New York – will host the special show at Sub89 in Friar Street on Sunday, December 13.

Dave Thorpe and Pete Hefferan talked to BBC Radio Berkshire’s Linda Serck when they went appeared on The Session last Sunday.

“I think I’m almost corny about my love for Christmas,” says guitarist Dave. “I’ve been thinking about plans for the gig, to make it special, but all I can come up with is Santa suits.”

It’s been about six months since the band played in Reading.

Dave says: “This is a bit different because Sub89 is a traditional gig venue which Reading hasn’t had for a while. So I think it should be quite exciting.”

Pete Hefferan, who also plays guitar and sings in the band, says: “We talked about Christmas covers, so I think there is going to be something good.”

Dave adds: “We did do a Christmas gig about two years ago for the BBC actually. It was for Huw Stevens and we did play a Christmas song then – the best Christmas song of all time, Silent Night.

“It was kind of indie rock standard. It was good, there was big guitar solos over the top.”

The Pirates are still tinkering with their recently recorded second album to be released in early 2010.

The release will be the follow-up to last year’s Little Death which contained the singles Mr Understanding, Knots and She Doesn’t Belong to Me.

The band, who hope to curate the night, will be supported by local boys Worship, fronted by Tim Baggott of Fox Cubs.

Support will also come from Ex-Lovers, a five-piece from London and Reading boy Paul Hodgson.

Tickets are available from Sound Machine in Harris Arcade, The Cell Studio in Cemetery Junction or Sub89, above Bar Risa.

You can also buy tickets from Wegottickets and Seetickets websites.

This lot are the the most overated bland load of rubbish I have ever heard. Proof that anyone can make it if you market ourself in the right way and play the right kind of music.
