Dhol raises the roof

By Linda Serck
March 19, 2009

And now for something a little bit different. The marvellous Dhol Foundation will be raising the roof at Plug ‘n’ Play studios in Reading on Saturday.

Led by the irrepressible Johnny Kalsi, this show features an array of musical styles: drum ‘n’ bass, tabla, hip hop, bhangra – all delivered with great theatre and with more than a bit of Celtic influence doubtlessly gained from

Johnny’s work with the Afro Celts.

Dhol drums are a traditional percussion instrument from the Punjab province in the north of India, from where Kalsi originates.

He experiments with dance beats and electronic music, mixing with the traditional Bhangra style on his albums.

UK born, The Dhol Foundation create an amazing and mighty sound with choreographed moves and a highly energetic and engaging performance.

The live DJ set features three dhol drummers plus Bindi Sagoo (Alaap) on Tabla and Plug ‘n’ Play’s own Gavin Lombos on guitar – all backed up by Francis Hylton (Incognito) on decks.
