Dodgy tickets and dizzy fans kick off

Hoards of welly-clad youngsters? Check. Nightmare traffic? Check. Early morning boozing? Check. Yes, it’s that time of year again – the Reading Festival is here.

Yesterday morning saw the start of the annual mudfest with thousands of music lovers gathering in the town.

From the train station, through town, along Caversham Road and down Richfield Avenue scores of people – some carrying guitars and sporting Mohicans – headed to the festival.

Despite some festivalgoers being scammed out of tickets, as reported in yesterday’s Post, the mood was jubilant. Richard Henderson, of Colchester in Essex, was one of the unlucky people caught out by blacklisted site xclusiveticket.com.

He shelled out £175 for a ticket which did not exist. But he took it all in his stride and was cheerfully necking back lager yesterday.

The 20-year-old explained how he had queued all night for a ticket.

He said: “I’ve been here since midnight – and drinking that whole time.

“I was really upset when I found out the ticket was fake but still decided to come along.”

Richard brought along his pals Katie Hempenstall and Siobhan O’Doherty. The girls, both 20, are festival novices.

Katie, of St Albans in Hertfordshire, said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing The Wombles.” Siobhan, of Tottenham in London, added: “I can’t wait to watch Biffy Clyro. I’ve never been to the festival before and I’m petrified.”

One lad left disappointed was Josh Nancolas who had his bag, sleeping bag, food and clothes pilfered before the festival had even started.

Josh, 17, of Camberley in Surrey, had been guarding his mates’ bags when his were swiped. It was taken sometime during the early hours of yesterday – Josh had been lying in Richfield Avenue since midnight waiting for his pals to buy last minute tickets.

“But I won’t let it spoil my festival,” he promised.

“Even if I did have to sleep under the stars and had my bag nicked.”

Dave Ford, 21, of Coventry in the West Midlands has been going to the festival for seven years. He attended with his pals and girlfriend Lisa Williams, 22, also from Coventry.

Dave is especially excited about watching Slipknot and Rage Against the Machine. He said: “We got to Reading at 7am. Now we’re just hoping we’re in the right queue.”

Lisa said: “We love going to gigs and the festival is cheap considering how many bands you get to see.”

The group have dedicated today to superheroes. Each one of them will be dressing as their own superhero.

But it was not such good news for motorists. From noon on Tuesday Tessa Road and Richfield Avenue were no parking areas.

One traffic warden told the Evening Post by 8.20am yesterday  they had dished out nine penalty charge notices just in Tessa Road.

I feel sorry for anyone who has been ripped off but….. I went to some of the first rock festivals in Reading (didn’t go for that blues stuff previously) and a few others around the country, and never had a problem why…..

We either had to buy our tickets before the date from a ‘SHOP’ or queue orderly on the day, none of this e-mail rubbish that’s prone to being ripped off. Later years had Telephone sales and again you spoke to a real person and so had no problems. As for parking most of us couldn’t afford or didn’t have cars so it was good old train bus or for me as a local WALK!!

Modern life makes it worse not better.

Now – why did they move WOMAD to the middle of nowhere?

This is my fifth festival and every year (having failed the internet rush) i queue on the wednesday for my ticket. Every other year it has run smoothly and i've been and got it within two hours max. I know it is a priviledge to buy the tickets on the door, and i appriciate that but it marks the begining of the festival for me! However, this year, it was not like that at all! I arrived at the site at 5a.m (remember that time) and sat down near the crowne plaza waiting for the box office to open at 12 (which is what i was told the previous evening having missed a random hour of ticket sales by 5 minutes that night) and at 7 a.m there was a random and pointless rush to the fence. Everyone got up and ran and the order of the queue got scrambled, all the people that had queued overnight got left behind because they couldn't pack themselves up in time for the unscheduled rush. Then after some waiting on the side of the road we were lead into a field. No barriers, just an open field in which the queue turned into a bundle. The order was scrambled once more. For the next 4-5 hours people waited in the field enduring a short surge every 20mins-30mins. Whilst people fainted around me, and the guards just stood eating ice lollies I watched helplessly as people were being allowed to climb over the hill and jumping in the queue. Once I had gotten to the hill, i then saw that there was an equally big queue that then lead directly to the box office. I joined this queue, and for hours again, endured a small surge every half an hour. With no information whatsoever. Once I could see where the unorganized crowd was being section off, and order was starting to form, the security guards decided to take the barriers away, ONCE AGAIN causing a surge in which the people on the outside and back could rush round to the front. So, i arrived at 5a.m, and i did not recieve my ticket until 9pm. That's 16 hours. 16 hours being over taken by people that had just arrived because it was so badly organised. 16 hours standing. 16 hours with no drink or anywhere to go to the toilet. It was so badly organised. Beyond belief. Especially as the system worked so well before. There was no reason to change it. Also, at the ticket desks/windows there was only 3-4 people serving at one time. I understand that they changed the one box office to two (not that it was well distributed information) but nothing was said. So dissappointed Reading.
