The sizzling sound of summer

By Linda Serck
July 18, 2008

Bit of a disappointing British summer so far? Head on down to Slough for the sizzling sounds of a Latin summer direct from Cuba and Columbia.

The West Wing Arts Centre is in the thrall of Latin fever on Friday and Saturday, where a host of sunny events include salsa, live music and food on Friday night, a special carnival for children on Saturday afternoon and then hot salsa big band Bacalao in the evening.

Bacalao bring to mind the great Cuban dance bands of the 40s and 50s.

From rumba to cha cha cha and salsa to mambo, this 12-piece band knows how to get the party started.

Since their formation nearly six years ago, Brighton-based Bacalao has developed into one of the biggest and most colourful salsa show bands in the country, thrilling audiences the length and breadth of the UK with their rich Cuban sound.

The two lead vocalists, Diego Monsalve and Rafael Berrio, hail from Colombia and many of the band members have journeyed to Cuba, the birthplace of salsa, to study and play with the best musicians there.

Dance the night away or simply sit back and enjoy the music.
