The Syd Lawrence Orchestra conjure up some great big band sounds at the South Lodge Hotel in Brighton Road, Lower Beeding, Werst Sussex, at lunchtime on Sunday, July 27. After a night with the WOW All Stars, pianist and composer Kate Williams appears with her quartet at Dorking’s Watermill Jazz Club on Thursday, July 31. Described by the late, great Humphrey Lyttleton as “superbly lucid and inventive”, Kate will be performing a mix of standards and her own compositions, including tunes from her new album, We Embrace. Folk, Roots, Country and Blues

Hot country picking has been lined up for the Surrey Mini Bluegrass Festival, at Mickleham Village Hall, near Dorking, on Saturday and Sunday, August 2 and 3. Run more like a party for people who are not on holiday, it’s a non-profit event that attracts high calibre performers. Headlining bands are Belgium’s The Sons Of Navarone and the East Sussex outfit Grassroots, who have been playing bluegrass for more than 30 years. The most recent addition to the long-standing line-up, arriving in 2003, is veteran bluegrass fiddle virtuoso Rick Townend. Howard Burton, Chris Moreton, Wood Wire & Words and Buffalo provide the support. As well as concerts on each day in the main part of the hall, there will be picking going on all weekend in the garden, in a marquee if it rains, starting at noon each day. Classical, opera and choral groups

The Charterhouse International Music Festival runs until Wednesday, July 30 and up to 80 musicians from as far away as China, Australia and Russia will be attending. The festival consists of daily master classes, lunch time and evening concerts by the students and a gala concert by the 10 professors of music who are teaching. The week offers the chance to discuss and explore solo and chamber music repertoire with celebrated teachers and performers, bringing together wind and string players, pianists and harpists. A library of chamber music is on site too. The week is predominantly aimed at 16- to 30-year-olds, and the evening concerts are open to the public. These take place in the Main Hall and the gala concert by the professors is on Sunday, July 27. Go Godalming Association presents Music in the Park 2008 at Godalming Bandstand with Phoenix on Sunday, July 27 from 3pm to 5pm. All concerts are free, bring your own garden chairs and picnic.
