AT LAST - A SHOWCASE FOR LOCAL BANDS

February 27, 2002

Local bands will be given a boost as a new live music venue is launched in the heart of Reading.

The Sound Foundation, a Berkshire-based live music management company, is launching weekly nights at The Fez Club in Gun Street to showcase signed and unsigned acts.

Sound Foundation supremo Hadyn Wood, 37, said: "We've been looking for a suitable venue with the right capacity for the past two years and we've finally found one that's prepared to invest the time and commitment.

"Touring bands play venues around the country and Reading's smack in the middle but we've got nothing. Hopefully, we'll make this a premier live music venue for that capacity.

"Music as a business is one of the largest exports for the UK in monetary terms, so it's very valuable.

"And music is the food of life — we'd notice it if we didn't have it."

Wood says he's keen to attract as diverse bands as possible, including Vex Red, Haven, Gomez and Electric Soft Parade.

The Launch Party for the new night kicks off tonight (Wednesday) at The Fez Club. Local heroes Jelutong headline with support from Monarchy. Doors open at 8pm with live music from 9pm.

Admission is free with a flyer available from the Gun Street venue (over-18s only).
