We speak to the band about past shows, injuries and dream support slots.
How did the band come together?
Xander (vocals): Well Guy, Oli and I met in school and Harry just seemed to be there, he didn't go to the same school, we aren’t sure where he came from really, but he’s never left!
Guy (guitar/vocals): We had a blast throughout a few school years and then seemed to go through an incredible amount of drummers, we had the worst luck ever! Then a friend of ours introduced us to [current drummer] Charlie and it was just perfect.
He's different to other drummers that we've played with and completely compliments everything we do both musically and personality-wise.
Since Charlie joined we've gone from being a band that plays a few gigs for fun to a band that really takes things seriously and wants to push forward and achieve great things. This is all we want to do in life.
What are the best and worst bits about being in the band?
Xander: I would say it’s playing live, I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie now! The worst bit is arguing, these boys are like my brothers, so it's OK to argue and we don't mean anything by it but we do know just how to wind each other up.
I guess finances are in there too ‘cause we’re small, we don't make much so supporting ourselves is hard.
Guy: We're definitely a live band, it's one of the most incredible feelings in the world and it's not something you can feel doing anything else!
Obviously being around each other so much, we do clash at times but we're all working together towards the same goals and we're all on the same page so there's still a lot of respect.
Oli (guitar): I really enjoy the recording aspect of it all. When we recorded our first EP, we took a week off work, donned our pyjamas and bundled into the studio.
What has been the most fun gig you've played so far?
Guy: We've played so many fun gigs and made so many friends. A particular highlight would have to be supporting POLAR at Guildford Backline.
It was an honour to share the stage with them but some of the most fun gigs are playing the smaller venues and cramming people in!
We've packed places like the Boileroom in Guildford and the Native Tongue in Epsom and the energy is just ridiculous. It's manic and seeing people have a great time is the most important thing!
Oli: Yeah, I have to agree with Guy. It’s the small ones that are the best. At the Native Tongue, there was a great mix of people. Most wouldn't even listen to our music normally but we just managed to draw them in. It was immense!
Have you had any funny mishaps live?
Xander: Oh hell yes! I'm not sure we ever play a show where everything goes along perfectly but we have learnt to roll with it.
Part of jumping round like madmen means there are often a few on stage accidents. In fact at the POLAR show I fell off stage. That was embarrassing but I just laughed it off and got on with it.
I know Guy’s been hit in the head by a rogue spinning guitar.
Guy: Man that hurt! I was rocking out on our first song and I swung my face into Harry's bass head where all the tuning pegs are. There was blood everywhere, it was pouring out just above my eye!
We still finished the song and the set though, I'm gonna have to be in more pain than that before I have to stop!
Oli: That was funny actually, half your face was red and your shirt was wrecked. In hindsight you probably should have done something about that.
If you could choose any act to tour with, who would it be?
Oli: I think I’d pick Alexisonfire. They seem to be on the same page when it comes to performing. It’s about getting sweaty and moving people!
Guy: I would choose Funeral For A Friend. They epitomise what it is to be passionate about music and everything they create is unique and interesting. They're also spot on live which I think is the true test of a real band plus every Welsh band looks hilarious to be around!
Tell us why people should vote for you guys in the Red Bull Bedroom Jam competition.
Xander: I think people should vote for us because we put on a show!
Guy: We've constantly worked hard and strived to make this band what it is today. It means the world to all of us and we'd really love this opportunity to experience new things and continue to write and perform our own music. You can vote for us every day and it only takes two seconds so please help us out!
