World Cup anthem sends message to Rooney
By Hugh FortJune 04, 2010
A group of mates have a message for England star Wayne Rooney not to go loony and keep his temper at the upcoming World Cup in their newly-released football anthem.
Trevor Watts, 35, from Easthampstead, Leon Wright, from Birch Hill, and Sam Kompfner, 33, from Reading, are the Bogus MC’s.
They say they were so sick at seeing the third re-release of the classic ‘Three Lions’ song by Frank Skinner, David Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds , they decided to do their own CD.
Their song ‘A Message to You Rooney’, is a parody of the famous ska/reggae song ‘Rudy, a message to you’, by Dandy Livingstone, covered by The Specials.
Manager Fabio Capello announced his squad on Tuesday and the boys think Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and co can do what has not been done for 44 years and bring back the trophy.
Sam said: “Rooney’s our best player by miles, if he gets injured I think we’ve had it, but if he doesn’t and we play well, I can see us winning it.”
The trio have previous experience of World Cup songs having released another anthem called ‘England Fans’ before the 2006 tournament.
Now, they are back and determined to provide an alternative to Three Lions.
Trevor, an audio visual engineer, said: “We heard there was another version of Three Lions coming out and we were like ‘oh no’, so we thought we’d do our own anthem.
“We think it’s pretty good and want as many people to listen to it as possible.
“We’re all great football fans. I’m a Tottenham fan, Leon supports Chelsea and Sam is a Reading supporter.
“Three Lions has got the line ‘we’ve seen it all before’ in, well we have with them, so why don’t we try something new?
“We tried before with England Fans, but we didn’t publicise it enough so no one knew about it.
“This time we’re going great guns to get it out there and see how well it does.”
The lads are certainly going for it, their email to The Standard also contained virtually every email address at the BBC, including top DJs Chris Moyles and Edith Bowman.
Trevor said as of yet they have not heard anything back, but insists their anthem is better than the rest of the songs on the market. The single is available on Amazon.com.
