Gig review: Farleigh Wallop Social Club event

By Drew Collins
December 30, 2009

Sunday, December 20. Farnborough Masonic Centre. Julia K, Brassneck, THAT Nadeen White Experience

‘Bringing live music back to Farnborough’ the headline screamed. I thought I’d better check it out. A Sunday seemed an odd night to have a gig but the turnout looked very healthy when I arrived. I was greeted by girls in ‘Wallop’ t-shirts (all part of the scene I think) who asked if I’d like to buy a curry. Naturally I agreed. Food and music together is something I’d not normally think of, but I thought I’d give it a go.

Upon walking in to the hall I was greeted by some top tunes playing over the P.A system. DJ’ed by one of the band “Brassneck” I believe. Someone has good taste anyway, the choice of music was perfect. I bought a drink sat down and marvelled at how nice the room was and what a great venue it is. Farnborough is crying out for more of these events I think to myself.

After a short introduction by a local radio guy “THAT Nadeen White Experience” start to play, They’re all dressed as pirates and are singing sea shantys ! This is very different but puts huge smiles on everyone’s faces. I like this place already. The band go down well.

Then there’s a break with more background songs being played (wow, when was the last time I heard a song by “The Divine Comedy” ?!) followed by the curry being served. I join the queue. It smells great. I get my curry, sit down, still enjoying the music and proceed to eat the best curry I have had in a long time. Having a curry during a gig is such a great idea.

“Brassneck” play next, apparently they organised all of tonight’s stuff so hat’s off to them for that. They play bouncy pop songs with quite dark lyrics. The sound system is crystal clear and I can hear every word of their lyrics. They’re good. Sometimes dark, sometimes funny actually. I laughed out loud a couple of times. These guys sure know how to cobble a tune together as well. I’m humming along to nearly all of their songs by the end of their set. I want to see this band again.

Rounding off the evening is Julia K, she’s a singer with a full backing band. They’re very slick and professional. She writes her own songs that are pretty darn good but plays a few cover versions too. Highlight of their set was easily news single “I Light Up”. A cracking tune from a singer with a great voice and great presence.

All in all it was a hugely enjoyable and well organised evening in an excellent venue. I hope there’s more of these events. I want to go again.
