Ruchetta Italian Restuarant in WokinghamBy Victoria Corbett

For lovers of Italian food who cannot afford frequent trips to Europe to sample the country’s cuisine direct, Wokingham has the next best thing.
Ruchetta in Rose Street has the style, atmosphere, staff and food to transport your hundreds of miles away to the restaurants of Italy, without you ever having to leave Wokingham town centre.
From the relaxed, yet attentive staff, who are professional and perfectly presented, to the intimate atmosphere in the restaurant’s various seating areas, which would cater for both a family celebration and a more cosy meal for two, this is fine dining at its best.
While we looked at what restaurant owner Angelo Colao had to offer on the menu, we enjoyed breadsticks and bread with a delightful tapenade, while sipping on glasses of Champagne.
For the summer season, the restaurant has celebrated truffles, with a menu featuring starters and main courses dedicated to the delicate delicacy.
I could not resist taking a bite out of this menu, and so ordered the scallops and risotto, which came topped off with thin slices of truffle to bring a lavish touch to an already luxurious dish.
The risotto rice had a heavenly texture, being creamy with tender rice. The scallops were perfectly cooked, and a delicious combination with the risotto.
Adam chose the wild mushrooms with pancetta and a boiled egg. I was lucky enough to wrestle a taste off his fork and get a taste of the most sumptuous all-day breakfast.
For a main course, I chose the mille feuille of scotch fillet of beef, which came with bresaola, porcini, pan-fried fois gras on top and a red wine sauce.
The salty bresaola, which is air-dried salted beef, was layered between succulent slices of beef fillet.
The combination was stunning and the red wine reduction was a sublime accompaniment to this.
Adam was tempted by the day’s special, which was Dover sole with crayfish, which came in a rich butter sauce that was packed with flavour and yet allowed the fish to be the star of the show.
Although we were too full to go for a sweet, there are plenty of dishes to choose from that are both light for those watching their waists and a little more indulgent, for people wanting the meal to go out with a bang.
Prices for starters start at around £7 and for mains range from £16 to £25.
So the next time you fancy a trip to Italy, look no further than Wokingham’s Rose Street, and save yourself the airfare.
