Dispatches: Britain on Benefits

Channel 4

8.30pm

Dispatches is a good documentary show, it's sometimes a bit silly and sensational, like the ludicrous programme about recreational drugs in football when a "Premiership star" turned out to be a bloke no-one had ever heard of who played for Fulham's reserves.

In this one, wheelchair basketball player Ade Adepitan looks at the Government's cuts to the Disability Living Allowance and what it means to people.

Misery, I imagine.

He speaks to a range of people including disabled workers, paralympians and former soldiers left disabled due to injury about what will happen when the benefit is cut.

While there are bound to be people out there claiming for either mild or fictitious disabilities who should be rooted out and stopped, you do worry that some people are going to be left penniless and alone by these changes.

TBH it has confused me. My son receives DLA and the last time we had to fill the encyclopaedia of a form in, he was granted it indefinitely. We had a letter the other day saying – well, I haven’t a clue really. One line says indefinitely doesn’t mean that anymore and things will change and in the next line it says nothing’s going to happen until 2015 unless his condition changes (brain transplants are not yet happening so I doubt it will!). They have made the whole thing so confusing and I’m not generally dumb on these things but it’s turning into a farce like the energy tariffs!
