Tonight's TV Choice: The Sky at Night

By Hugh Fort
January 10, 2013

The Sky at Night

BBC 4

7.30pm

Patrick Moore, TV legend and the best (only) xylophone player I've ever seenm, died last month after more than 50 years of telling astronomers where to direct their high-powered telescopes.

I of course remember him better for telling hapless video gamers like me how to cheat their way to victory on Sonic the Hedgehog in his brilliant bizarre spell as Channel 4's The Gamesmaster, where he lived in a virtual reality world and mocked computer game players for their pathetic skills.

This is the very final episode of his programme The Sky at Night.

Even at the age of 89, you could see his enthusiasm and love of astronomy.

TV insiders said no-one did a better job of enthusing new astronomers and losing a national institution like The Sky at Night will be a sad loss to our screens.
