Tonight's TV Choice: Sports Life Stories

By Hugh Fort
December 04, 2012

Sports Life Stories, ITV4, 10pm

I was listening to this somewhat unremarkable FA cup game between Spurs and Bolton in the car on the way back from somewhere last March.

Suddenly the commentator's tone changed completely as it became clear that Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba had suddenly fallen to the ground with no-one anywhere near him.

The game obviously stopped as medical stuff rushed to his aid.

Mystery surrounded what had happened and it was only later that evening that it was revealed Muamba had suffered severe cardiac arrest and that his heart had stopped for an incredible 78 minutes.

Doctors managed to resuscitate him, which is pretty remarkable.

In this programme he talks about the incident, as well as life growing up in the Congo.

There's also the interesting conflict of the misery of his forced retirement and the somewhat extraordinary feat of being alive at all.
