Tonight's TV Choice: The Secret Life of Rubbish

By Hugh Fort
November 29, 2012

The Secret Life of Rubbish, BBC4, 9pm

This looks at the evolution of rubbish collection in Britain.

From wartime where people used to keep and re-use everything or burn it on their coal fires, to the modern day where massive lorries collecting all sorts of recycling block your road when you're late for work.

We will learn how the increase in affluence and quality of life has directly resulted in a huge increase in the amount of rubbish collected.

We also take a trip back to Birmingham in the 1950s, which at the time was the place for environmental thinking, and look at an old scheme where rubbish was disposed of with hardly any waste products.

Perhaps they'll look at the question why nowadays, despite high-profile recycling campaigns and pretty much everyone buying into the whole ethos, you can still buy mass-produced items which can't be recycled at all.
