Out on DVD: Up (12)
By Anna RobertsFebruary 10, 2010
Disney has come a long way since the days of Mickey, Minnie and Daffy – their latest (Oscar-nominated) offering Up is proof of that.
Quite simply, and this comes from someone who sniffs at animated films, Up is amazing – sweet, funny, clever and brilliant.
The last film I cried at was Free Willy or possibly The Lion King. Well that all changed when I watched Up – I wept buckets.
Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Edward Asner) is a 78-year-old who has harboured a life-long ambition of moving to South America.
Along with his wife Ellie, Carl dreams of a beautiful place, a waterfall, called Paradise Falls.
But the pair are happy together in their cosy home which they have lovingly decorated and cared for.

Then tragedy strikes when Ellie dies. Heartbroken, Carl cannot believe they never visited Paradise Falls – until he realises the pair had many homemade adventures of their own.
He is a lonely old man until he gets fire in his belly as the council want to knock down his house, the home he made and cared for with Ellie.
So he devises an insane – but lovely – plan of tying a load of balloons to his house and flying it all to Paradise Falls.
Everything is going well until he realises he has inadvertently taken along a gatecrasher called Russell.
Russell – a fantastic character – is a Wilderness Scout who was knocking on Carl’s door when the home took flight.
Together the pair head south.
Along the way they meet an assortment of characters including a talking bird and a herd of evil dogs.
Up is completely wonderful, an absolutely fantastic film. Children will love it, but so will adults.
Funny, touching, sweet and delightful – just some adjectives which describe Up. After watching it, you really will feel up.
