Kate Winslet's ancestors were Reading publicans

June 22, 2009

Oscar winner Kate Winslet’s ancestors were Reading publicans, according to the 1911 census.

The census, which is online for the first time, revealed her great-grandfather Charles Winslet was a Licensed Victualler (innkeeper) running the The Lion Public House in Great Knollys Street.

At the time of the census he was living with Emily Mary Winslet, Kate’s great-grandmother and his son, Kate’s grandfather, who was two years old.

The pub is no longer open and there is understood to be flats on its site.

It seems the pub trade ran in the family as Charles had followed in his father John Winslet’s footsteps.

John, Kate’s great-great-grandfather is listed in 1911 as a retired Licensed Victualler living with his 37-year-old daughter Catherine Winslet.

Following the initial release of the Southern English records in January, the website now hosts the complete 1911 census records for people living in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

And for the first time in a British census, full details are available of British Army personnel and their families stationed overseas.

Christine Webber, psychotherapist and lifecoach, said: “Being able to find out how our grandparents and great-grandparents lived gives our own lives some extra perspective, and also helps us to understand ourselves better.

“The ability to delve into what our relatives were doing almost a hundred years ago is fascinating. It also helps us to get a sense of our own place in history.

“I think that getting in touch with your own roots is a very valuable and healing thing to do.”

I notice Bill has completely missed the point that he was wrong. He would rather focus on me.

Shame.

I think Kate Winslet is uniquely beautiful and a national treasure. We in Reading should be proud to call her one of our daughters!

I looked for Anna Roberts' name - but strangely this excellent piece of investigative journalism is missing that information.
