He’s Just Not That Into You is possibly the only film ever released based on a self-help book.

But don’t worry if you are the sort of person who cautiously avoids the dippy, self-help, soul searching sections – it’s not like that at all.

With an all-star (mainly female) cast, featuring the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connolly, Drew Barrymore and Ben Affeck, it seems He’s Just Not That Into You was destined to do well.

Bizarrely though, the lead is the very likable and very sweet Ginnifer Goodwin, a relative unknown. It was a great choice as she is adorable.

Gigi (Goodwin) has suffered a series of romantic setbacks – basically no man ever sticks with her. This leads her to spend hours cyber-stalking various ex-lovers to no avail.

At the same time Janine (Connolly) and Ben’s (Bradley Cooper) marriage is on the rocks. She does not know this – we only know because he has started an affair with the beautiful and sexy Anna (Johannson).

Janine and Gigi work with Beth (Aniston) who has lived with Neil (Affleck) for years but still is not married.

Then there is Anna’s friend Mary (Barrymore) who is being cheated on.

Cleverly – as indicated by the large ensemble cast – the film consists of a number of interlinked story lines which is really done very subtly. The characters’ love lives and lives are linked more than they realise, although the audience has the benefit of knowing.

The film does not have a huge plot – it’s concerned with the characters’ lives and relationships, not just in love but in friendship too.

It also has very witty moments. Women across the world will be cringing about what Gigi (and admittedly they have) done in pursuit of a bloke who really was not worth it.

The characters are not one-dimensional and there is a good mix of ‘bad’ and ‘good’, both male and female.

He’s Just Not That Into You is well worth watching – but perhaps one for the girls more than the boys. It might just restore your relationships too.
