Get your skates on for Reading Half Marathon

November 12, 2012

More than two thirds of the 15,000 places in the 2013 Mizuno Reading Half Marathon have already been snapped up.

The message from organisers Brasher Leisure/Sweatshop to runners intending to enter is clear – don’t delay, enter today.

While the race is not until Sunday, March 17, entries are pouring in by the day, and would-be participants need to be fleet of foot if they want to avoid hitting the sold-out wall.

“With still four months to go we are filling up fast and the race could well be full before Christmas, if not sooner,” said assistant race director Claire Bond.

“We want as many runners from Reading as possible, so our message is get your entry in now to avoid disappointment.”

The Mizuno Reading Half Marathon is the biggest in the country bar the Great North Run, and runners come from all over the country and overseas to pound the streets.

Taking runners from Green Park, the 13.1 mile course finishes at the Madejski Stadium, raising hundred of thousands of pounds for charity.

This year’s official charities – CLIC Sargent, The Fire Fighters Charity, Against Breast Cancer, Berkshire MS Therapy Centre, The Royal Berks Charity, Austistica, and Sue Ryder – are all looking for runners to raise funds for their good causes.

Places in the 2.8km Green Park Challenge are also running out fast, with almost half of the 1,500 allocated already.

To be taken with a pinch of salt..., Tilehurst - I am not disputing how well run it is, as I know it is a great event. I was just wondering how it costs £450k to put on.

£33.50 (which inculdes a donation to the official charities) for a fantastic, well run event with 13 miles of course covering a large area of Reading is not bad at all. If you don't take the place, someone else will (gladly).

@Smiffy, I think it's to fund the christmas booze up for the council staff, but like David Williams, I could also be wrong...

   @ Smiffy

I believe it is a contribution toward funding the repair of the roads after the event - all that staggering by so many people puts and awful strain on the roads and pavements.

I could be wrong though.

I haven't done it for a while, but was tempted until I saw it was £33.50 to enter - why does it cost so much to enter these days?

@ Bruce - clearly not. GR wouldn't report it if it wasn't kosher so to speak.

Ger your skates on? Surely that's cheating?!
