Brighter prospects for Royal County of Berkshire Show

September 06, 2012

The Royal County of Berkshire Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16, marking the end of a depressing season for the county show circuit.

Shows cancelled due to poor weather, such as the Badminton Horse Trials, are estimated to have cost the rural economy up to £240m.

Berkshire’s entry coordinator David Nerbert said: “It’s been a summer of doom and gloom, with many shows having to be cancelled or otherwise badly affected by the weather.

“For a while, our animal entries were slow, but they have been coming in thick and fast in the past week and have now ended very strong, particularly cattle.

“Owners and breeders are looking to the Berkshire Show to make up for the disappointment of the season, and to put back what they have missed in terms of enjoyment.”

Penning facilities for the livestock classes will be fully occupied, with 138 exhibitors bringing more than 550 cattle and calves.

There will also be many pigs and sheep.

Showjumping entries closed on August 25, and here too there has been a burst of entries, including Katie Jerram, who won Supreme Horse at the Royal International Show 2012. She will show Favour, The Queen’s horse.

Kingsclere-born TV presenter Clare Balding will also lead a sporting parade on Sunday, September 16
