Fun for everyone at Swallowfield Show

Swallowfield Show will proudly celebrate its 126th anniversary on August Bank Holiday with stunts, demonstrations and family entertainment.

The event on Sunday, August 29, and Monday, August 30, is organised by a team of members and friends of Swallowfield Horticultural Society.

Featured attractions in the main arena include comedy and stunts involving horses and a motorbike from a team called Stallions of Substance and the Rockwood Dog Display.

Supporting acts will be Birds of Bray, Parades of Vintage Vehicles, Marching Bands and terrier racing organised by Jo Burdett.

Live music will entertain visitors on both afternoons in the bandstand, with performances from the New Tones Big Band on Sunday and Johnny Gunner with his Rock ‘n’ Roll Band on Monday.

The entertainment marquee welcomes Mini Car Racing for the second year, while in the Circus School section children can learn circus skills under the tuition of Tinker Taylor.

Big Foot and Furry Foot will be clowning about and holding regular shows for the younger visitors.

The entertainment marquee will also host an exhibition of art and a display by the local history society.

Nearby, Kondini will be holding two afternoon shows involving beds of nails and spectacular fire eating.

The younger visitors to the show can enjoy train and pony rides, as well as the bouncy pirate ship, revolving teacups and a huge slide.

Garden fans can admire the Swallowfield Show Garden created specially for the show by Spencers Wood Allotment Gardeners (SWAG) outside the main marquee. This will house the competition exhibits of

locally grown flowers, vegetables and fruits, together with floral art, crafts, photography, art and cookery.

Competitors will be awarded trophies in excess of £1,000 in prize money. The craft area of the marquee has been expanded so crafters can demonstrate.

The village’s local beekeepers will have competition exhibits on display and honey for sale.

There will be a chance to watch racing ferrets and terriers near the main entrance, and visitors can also bring along their dogs to enter the races.

The dog show will also give prized pooches the chance to shine with a variety of fun classes offering rosettes for all winners.

The horse show begins at 9am on both days and is bigger than ever this year.

For the first time there will be style jumping, best rider and western riding events. Old favourites such as the Swallowfield jumping championships will return for another year.

Exploring the show will give visitors the chance to take in even more attractions, such as a fairground, Punch and Judy shows and vintage vehicles on display.

Pet lovers can check out the quirky animal portraits produced by Colin Castle, from Crowthorne.

He said: “They have wonderful faces, just full of character and they have proved very popular with the art-loving public.”

The Swallowfield Show takes place at Whitehouse Farm in Spencers Wood.

@FairyCake What's wrong with that? It was terrific value last year - our nipper had such a good day that she still talks about it to this day.
