High spirits for Hallowe'en
October 26, 2007
As the nights draw in and the shadows lengthen, Basildon Park in Berkshire prepares to swing open its gates and beckon visitors through to a week of hair-raising family fun, in celebration of the spookiest night of the year.
The 18th-century mansion and gardens have an exciting programme of ghoulish activities for all ages.
This year’s line-up includes:
Carving grotesque pumpkin faces at special workshops in the garden room.
Storytelling about Hallowe’en traditions for those more intrepid visitors.
A Hallowe’en-themed trail taking children around the pleasure grounds as they search for clues.
Activity sheets to complete, with a quiz about the house itself – did you know the scary plaster griffins in the house were originally added to ward off evil spirits?
In preparation for the Big Night on Wednesday, children can arm themselves with their own colour and cut out bat masks and witches’ hats. All materials are supplied by staff at Basildon. This activity could come in useful for the ‘fright-ful’ fancy dress option, with prizes for every costume.
The shop, reception area, tearoom and garden marquee will be hung with Hallowe’en decorations, to create a spine-chilling atmosphere! So, join us if you dare, and keep your eyes peeled for unexpected guests...
Halloween Family Fun runs until Sunday, October 28, from 11am to 5pm.
No booking required, normal admission charges, plus £2 for each activity.
