Children in high spirits in Wokingham Halloween events

By Laura Herbert
November 09, 2012

There were ghostly goings-on at Hallowe’en celebrations around the borough last week.

Nurseries, schools and businesses organised a series of seriously spooky events as children dressed as witches, spiders, pumpkins and Dracula.

Apple bobbing, an unlucky dip and cake sale were some of the activities organised by staff at Electric Tattoo in Wokingham last Wednesday.

Tom Bazley, of the Broad Street tattoo studio, said: “Despite the weather it was really good fun.”

At Happitots Nursery, in Winnersh, the Bumblebees and Caterpillars classes carved their own pumpkins and had a party.

Year 11 pupils at The Bulmershe School, in Woodley, organised a Hallowe’en disco for Year Seven and Eight pupils on Thursday, October 25, as part of their ASDAN CoPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) qualification.

Around 150 pupils dressed in Hallowe’en costumes and raised £350 for disability charity SCOPE.

Businesses donated time and items to the event, including a DJ from A to Z Roadshow, a three-tier Hallowe’en cake, decorations and raffle prizes.

Little ones came to Hazebrouck Nursery in Arborfield dressed as scary spiders, pumpkins and witches last Wednesday.

Around 30 children tucked into a frightening menu including spooky soap sandwiches and eyeball crisps.

Police officers, firefighters and Wokingham Community Wardens offered Halloween and bonfire safety tips in Lower Earley on Tuesday, October 30.

Children got to have a look in a police riot van, experience a smoke tent used by the fire service, enjoy face painting and a fancy dress competition at Kilnsea Drive events field.

Dancers from 1, 2 Step Dance Academy, based in Wokingham and Finchampstead, took part in a three-night Hallowe’en Spectacular at Coral Reef in Bracknell.

Principal Michelle Bolwell said: “It’s been a fantastic event and the dancers loved every minute of it.”
