Great Hollands Neighbourhood Action Group to disband

By Becky Barnes
August 02, 2012

A community group that has worked hard to resolve issues in a neighbourhood for five years has decided to disband after the council cut funding earlier this year.

Responsibilities of the Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG) in Great Hollands have been taken over by the New Great Hollands Community Association and the Great Hollands Neighbourhood Organisation.

Reverend Michael Bentley, former NAG chairman, who has lived on the estate for 33 years, said: “NAG will soon cease to exist as a separate entity but is being taken over by two Great Hollands community groups.

“It is mainly since the borough council has withdrawn their admin assistance and the presence of one of their officers to arrange the meetings and take minutes.

“We did think we could carry on without them because now that I am police chaplain I have been able to arrange for a police officer to be present at meetings.

“But there was a meeting a few months ago of all the community groups in Great Hollands and it seems that the NAG duties can easily be done by that group – most of the NAG members serve on those groups anyway.”

The group gave residents the opportunity to air their views on issues such as parking and speeding but dwindled to fewer than 10 members.

Rev Bentley said: “I am absolutely convinced the work of NAG will be continued by like-minded people in Great Hollands – and I will still be involved to help.”

People who live in Great Hollands can have their say on community issues at the New Great Hollands Community Association forum at the Talk shop, Great Hollands Square, at 10am on Saturday, October 6.
