School holiday kids were no newt-sance

By Mike Pyle
April 27, 2009

Some newt kids on the block spent an evening and a morning discovering the wealth of amphibious life.

Youngsters and their parents spent the evening with rangers from Bracknell Forest Council’s parks and countryside team making traps to catch newts living in a pond in Pope’s Meadow, Binfield.

The next morning the budding Bill Oddies went back to count the creatures they had caught.

Marlies Fell, biodiversity officer for the council, said: “We got 25 smooth newts, 60 sticklebacks and a few diving beetles.

“In the evening we also saw toads and frogs.

“It was very successful and the kids were all really excited about it.

“There was a grandfather there as well, who was enjoying it as much as the kids – it just shows that it’s good for children of all ages!”

The event was organised during the Easter holidays.
