First birthday: The Oaks in Great Hollands

By Mike Pyle
April 22, 2009

Parents and children got together for a birthday party with a difference at a community centre.

Families celebrated the first birthday of The Oaks children’s centre with a range of activities around the Great Hollands facility, which now supports more than 10 different courses and drop-in sessions.

Bracknell Forest Mayor councillor Bob Edger opened the centre at Great Hollands Primary School, in Wordsworth, on March 11 last year when he was deputy mayor.

To celebrate the anniversary more than 30 families went to the centre for an Easter egg hunt and to play with arts and crafts.

Centre manager Sandra Woodward said: “It was a fantastic event – there was plenty of laughter and I would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers involved in helping to host such a successful event.”

The Oaks is one of six children’s centres across the borough run by Bracknell Forest Council.

Councillor Gareth Barnard added: “Congratulations to The Oaks on its first birthday.

“The Oaks, as well as the other children’s centres in the borough, are a great resource for the local community, especially for new or young parents.

“Well done to Sandra and her team for their success over the last year.”

On offer for parents and youngsters at the centre:

- baby and toddler information and advice

- a breastfeeding café

- young parents drop-in

- speech and language therapy

- dads and kids Saturday group

- Citizens’ Advice Bureau drop-in

- Bumps and Babies

- well baby clinic

- Chinese and Polish groups

- parenting support.
