China trek as mums fight cancer

By Lorna Catling
November 12, 2008

Two friends have pledged to raise as much money as possible to support cancer charities after both their mums were diagnosed with the disease.

Julie Moore and Janice Mclane have organised a Christmas fair and are walking part of the Great Wall of China next year for Breast Cancer Campaign and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Breast Cancer Campaign was chosen by Julie, from Warfield, after her mum Joy Lowe was diagnosed with it and Janice, from Crowthorne, picked Macmillan because the charity’s nurses are caring for her mum while she battles lung cancer.

Julie, 49, said: “We just thought, here we are, two women in their 40s, our children have grown up and we wanted to do something.

“Both of us felt our mothers, who are still with us, were treated so well that we wanted to put something back into that.”

Their first foray into fundraising will be the Christmas fair on Thursday, November 20, in Binfield Memorial Hall from 7pm.

For a £3 entrance fee, which includes a glass of wine and mince pie, people will be able to enjoy a tombola, chocolate fountain, Virgin Vie cosmetics, Christmas decorations, Smelly Cats perfume and much more.

And next May the pair will leave for China to begin a week-long trek covering 12km of the Great Wall each day.

Julie, whose two daughters work for Bracknell department store Bentalls and electronic firm Panasonic, said: “We have had a lot of support from our families.

“My two girls have been brilliant, they’ve put up posters at work and have just been so supportive.”
