Rare piglets born at Warfield butcher

A prize-winning Welsh boar has fathered two litters of bouncing rare breed piglets in the past month.

Hornbuckle Big Boy produced litters of nine and 10 with British Saddlebacks Stripe and Spot at Hornbuckle Farm, Hawthorn Hill, Warfield, with the most recent born on Sunday, January 20.

Charlotte Quinn, of family-run butchers Quintessential Meats, which runs the farm, said her children Eleanor, six, Thomas, two and William, five months, have been helping look after and feed the litter.

The 36-year-old added: “They understand what they have been bred for and of course love a cuddle.

“The piglets have been bred to go through the butchery for some quality rare breed pork with a great flavour and a lovely covering of fat.”

The piglets are never named and other sows at the farm are due to give birth in the next couple of months, with all meat going through the family butchery.

Charlotte and husband James, 33, run the farm and farm shop, selling their free range breed pork and lamb, award-winning homemade sausages, fresh vegetables and locally baked goods and dairy products.

James is one of three finalists in the butcher category for a ‘Rural Oscar’ in the South East Countryside Alliance Awards 2012, which is due to be announced next month.

The family will be running bluebell walks at the farm during April where people can meet the animals and enjoy a barbecue and an open day in June to include tractor and trailer rides.

Of course they understand! You can see it on their little faces! Dish of the Day at Milliways anyone?
