Mangal brings at taste of Turket to Reading town centre

January 30, 2013

Albondigas and Manchego cheese used to come out of the kitchens at this property in St Mary’s Butts – but now you are more likely to be served mixed kebabs from the barbecue.

Turkish Mediterranean restaurant Mangal has moved in to the former La Tasca site and is looking forward to its new high-profile location.

The independent eaterie opened in King’s Road three years ago and boss Zinar Demeni hopes to bring his existing customers with him and attract passing trade in the busy town centre street.

The restaurant opened its doors to about 150 invited guests on January 14, and it is now ready to welcome diners looking for authentic Turkish fare.

Mr Demeni said: “The move has been painstaking and a lot more work than we expected, but I think we’ve created something quite unique. I don’t think you’ll find anything else quite like this in the whole of Berkshire.

“We have changed about 15 per cent of the menu and we’ve moved the barbecue to the front of the restaurant so everyone can see how their food is being cooked.”

Bellydancers perform for diners every Friday and Saturday night and there is live music on occasional Friday evenings.

The restaurant is also planning a special event on Saturday, February 16, with a male belly dancer and a set menu.
