Retailers in Caversham are hoping to pull in the gift-hunting crowds with a late-night opening event.
Caversham Traders Association is enticing Christmas shoppers with the promise of unique goods from independent stores without the queues and parking charges associated with bigger town centres.
Many of the stores will also be offering discounts during the event on Wednesday, December 12.
Chris Walton, chairman of the traders association, said: “This is the second year we have had a late night opening. Last year’s event was great and we had really positive feedback. This year even more Caversham traders have come on board and really entered into the spirit of things.”
Participating shops will open until 9pm and 10 per cent discounts will be on offer after 5.30pm, from the likes of Dancia International, House of Cards and Le Masseur Personnel.
There will be an open evening at The Family Chiropractic Clinic and 10 per cent off treatments at Perry’s Beauty when customers mention Caversham Traders Association.
Make and Do will be staging a Christmas craft taster workshop, where participants can make a festive wreath, felt decoration or glass candle holder for £6.
St Anne’s RC Primary School choir and the Caversham Baptist Church choir will be singing carols.
Caversham Baptist Church will offer refreshments and hold a Traidcraft sale while Father Christmas will be accompanied by Caversham Health and Fitness’s Parker the Penguin as he makes his way around Church Street and Prospect Street.
Refreshments will be on offer from Warings Bakery, Alto Lounge and Reading Retail Awards winner Delicious, among others.
Mr Walton said: “Caversham boasts a large number of award-winning independent specialist shops, so anyone stuck for Christmas gift ideas is bound to find something special here, all at very competitive prices.
“We’re also very proud of the wide range of restaurants here in Caversham, again some of them award winners.
“After an evening of shopping people can choose Chinese, Thai, Greek, Indian, British and Italian cuisine to name just a few.”
Caversham Traders Association is holding a Christmas competition with prizes from businesses including Waitrose, The Spice Oven and Thames Rivercruise.
