Dorothy Perkins store set to close

A major retailer could leave Wokingham later this year in a blow town planners believe emphasises the need for regeneration.

Burton and Dorothy Perkins in Market Square is scheduled to close at the end of October signalling the loss of eight jobs.

The revelation comes days ahead of a new indoor market opening to try to entice more shoppers into the town.

Town centre regeneration manager Bernie Pich said: “We are aware of Dorothy Perkins’ plan to leave its current store and are disappointed that this will leave a vacant unit in Denmark Street.

“While we are not aware of the precise factors leading to their departure, it appears to be in line with Arcadia’s property strategy announced last November to close around 10 per cent of their existing stores due to a 38 per cent fall in annual profit.

“This closure reinforces one of the main goals of the regeneration project which is to strengthen north south footfall within the town.

“We plan to introduce new anchors at the bottom of Denmark street and at Peach Place that should help draw custom back to the town and increase footfall past locations such as the Dorothy Perkins shop.”

Staff at the store say they were told the clothing chain attempted to negotiate its rent for a refurbishment but decided to end the lease when no agreement could be reached with the landlord.

Deputy manager Emma Willmoth said: “The store needs a refit. The heating and air conditioning is very old and would cost thousands to repair.

“The back of house is also very small and needs an extension.

“It would be a shame to close because there aren’t many men’s shops in Wokingham as it is.

“We’ve had a few complaints and people have been writing to the council.”

Staff believe the closure, which could be postponed until after Christmas, is not due to sales which the deputy manager says are pretty good.

Mark Walton, president of Wokingham Chamber of Commerce, said: “It’s always a shame to see a bigger store move out.

“The timing of this is unfortunate ahead of the regeneration but this is an opportunity for someone to come in.

“It is a fairly large unit which could be difficult in the current market to get re-let.

“Wokingham needs to market itself for what shoppers want to use it for and landlords need to present their units in a much tidier fashion to be ready for letting.

“The upside is not far away with the regeneration in the next three to five years. There are some big changes coming but that doesn’t help tenants in the next few months.”

Arcadia Group, the parent company of the store, failed to comment as The Wokingham Times went to press.

The indoor market in the former Peacocks store, in Denmark Street, opens on Saturday.

Around 20 businesses have registered an interest in the venture, which begins with a three-month trial.

The market is open from 9am to 4pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays, with charity stalls and table-top sales on Wednesdays.

Yes and while we're at it, a particular gripe for me is the staff of M & Co who use the covered walkway at the corner of Luckley Path/Peach St. outside the shop entrance as a smoking shelter and then leave their discarded cigarette butts all over the pavements...

PoneRana - blimey I can't believe you've said what I've felt (but didn't know if I was the only one). I've often felt that some of the little things greatly let Wokingham down - such as what you mentioned, or a top up of paint (if they're allowed to of course...), a clean of windows or doors... what looks like (but may not be) a lack of pride.

We need the existing shops to adopt a better attitude to the street outside their shops. There a number of shops in the town centre where if the shop took a broom a swept the pavement outside the shop once a week and pulled up the weeds growing between the shop and the pavement the deteriorating environment would be considerably improved.

I also had the unpleasant experience of pushing a double pushchair down Denmark Street on Saturday. There were a number of A-boards on the pavement that forced me onto the road. It is about time the local council banned the use of A-boards.

There are other problems that cause people not to want to shop in Wokingham. For example market traders that don't display their prices. This is unacceptable particularly for stalls like greengrocers and in other local towns where the council is more active would result in traders losing their licence.

That is a good idea Champs. If the council moved into the empty shops the new supermarket could be built on the site of the current council offices leaving and possibly extending the Elms Field open space.

Perhaps they should move to the empty Peacocks store opposite - temporarily being used for the indoor market!!

I bet they would get a very good deal from that landlord.

Whenever there are consultations regarding the proposed development of Elmsfield most people attending are against it. Then when WBC publish the results they say the majority are in favour!

The ...... at WBC believe building a new supermarket will regenerate the town. Ha ha. I reckon half the shops in The Town Centre are either empty or the tenants are being subsidised with reduced or no rents.

Is there a case for criminal negligence if this £80m development proves a flop?

Is Woky council going to reconsider the redic rents they charge retailers and consider FREE PARKING shock horror, in order to encourage people to the 'not many shops as it is' tc?

This fits in well with the council's plan to further increase the number of empty shops in the town by building yet more on Elms Field.

Does this represent an increase or a decrease in the risk associated with the council tax payers money that WBC is investing in regenerating Wokingham town centre?

You will not create more footfall in the town once the new supermarket is opened on the south side. People will go to the supermarket , buy their goods including the type of clothing sold by Dorothy Perkins and go back home. My guess is DP has seen the writing on the wall unlike Wokingham Cllrs and Bernie Peach. Looks like another indoor market could be opened.

Internet shopping is great. No need to drive a smelly car into a traffic jam then paying for parking. Is 'regeneration' in the proposed form going to change that? I'll still buy a train ticket and head for Reading.

Oh and LOL@ '“It would be a shame to close because there aren’t many men’s shops in Wokingham as it is.'
