getreading shortlisted for a national award

March 19, 2010

getreading has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Berkshire’s favourite local paper website has been shortlisted in the digital news service of the year category alongside the portals for The Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, the European Wall Street Journal, the Belfast Telegraph and the Manchester Evening News in the 2010 Newspaper Awards.

Sister paper the Reading Post’s Property Paper has also been shortlisted in the Coldset Colour Supplement of the Year class.

getreading and Reading Post editor Andy Murrill said: “The Reading Evening Post was among the first local newspapers in the UK to launch its own website in 1995 and we have been at the forefront of digital news ever since.

“getreading.co.uk is an innovative and highly popular site which hosts a free flowing community conversation with lively input from our thousands of daily users.

“Last year we launched the getreading newspaper – the first local paper in the UK to be named after a website – and we now have both the most viewed website and most read local newspaper in Berkshire.

“This shows how newspapers and the web can work together to give the best possible information service to our readers.

“We thank you for responding so positively and hope we win this national award for Reading against some of the biggest media companies in the world.”

Owner of getreading and the Reading Post Surrey and Berkshire Media has put up the best showing of any local newspaper company in the shortlists with the Surrey Advertiser and Surrey Times in the Newspaper Design of the Year, Surrey Homes & Property in the Most Outstanding Use of Colour category and the Surrey Advertiser in Weekly Newspaper of the Year.

The winners will be announced at a glitzy ceremony at London’s Hilton Hotel on Wednesday, April 21.

In getreading's world of journalistic cliches, a ceremony has to be "glitzy", a national award has to be "prestigious", and the "community conversation" has to be "freeflowing". It's got Winner written all over it! What's not to like!

Perhaps a celebratory roller disco if you win? Richiecola can make an outfit out of curtains for the occasion...oh, but it sounds like heaven!

Yeah, well done GetReading. However, what about an award for the number of spelling and grammar errors we consistently see on this site?

Sounds harsh but it is very true!

However in the spirit of friendship and the getreading community I believe that should getreading win this award that they hire out my favorite wetherspoons for the evening for all getreading contributers.
