Forbury Hotel’s future revealed

By Paul Robins
December 11, 2009

The new owners of The Forbury Hotel have unveiled their vision for its future.

Reading’s Grade II-listed five star hotel will be the first in the von Essen chain’s set of Metropolitan hotels, styled as a town centre business retreat focusing on the corporate market.

The group – which also owns Cliveden at Taplow – acquired The Forbury on October 1, six months after it called in the administrators.

It also bought the 16 self-contained apartments and penthouse next to the 23-bed hotel in Forbury Square, which has its own 30-seat cinema and two restaurants, Eden and Cerise.

There have been minor changes to the private dining area and there will be new signage outside the building.

Sales and marketing boss Greg Ward told guests at a bucks fizz breakfast meeting yesterday that business had “really taken off” since it took over.

The Forbury will be followed early next year with the launch of von Essen’s second Metropolitan site – Hotel Verta in London.
