Business Profile: Safety Zone Security Ltd

By Paul Robins
September 15, 2009

Damian Mielczarek and his team run security at some of Reading’s top nightspots – and they mean business.

The business:
Safety Zone Security Ltd, Prospect Street, Reading, (0118) 962 1480, www.safetyzonesecurity.co.uk

The boss:
Damian Mielczarek.

What is your business about?
“Safety Zone Security is one of the new generation of security companies, where continued investment in people and a dedication to customer service is bringing a level of professionalism not previously seen in the industry.
“We offer door supervision, static guarding, town centre marshalling, event management and concierge services.”

How did you start?
“I moved from Poland to England shortly after my 15th birthday. When I arrived I stayed with a relative until I was able to find a job, which was working in a warehouse.
“Once I earned enough money I started out on my own. When I became 18 I started a job as a security officer and also did door work for clubs in Reading.
“Once I had gained experience in the security industry I felt it was the right time to start my own business.”

Where did the inspiration come from?
“Since a young age I have always aspired to own a business. I like to have my own ideas and to be able to follow them through.
“I started the business about 16 months ago. I had seen the more professional way in which security companies operated in the big cities and felt there was a gap in the market.
“It has given me new experiences and more new challenges which I think is good in business.”

Do you have any employees?
“Due to the nature of security work we hire private contractors. We have around 50 on the books.”

Do you do a lot of work in Reading?
“Yes. We provide security services for The Jazz Club at Madejski Stadium, The Red Lion, Bridges Hall, and we have a number of other venues outside Reading.”

Do you have to deal with a lot of trouble in the town?
“There is some trouble in Reading as with all large towns but on the whole I would describe Reading as a very safe town.
“I have always found the police to have good response times in Reading and I feel this is key to keeping the level of trouble to a minimum.
“The mark of a good security firm is to keep the trouble outside the door.”

Is the reputation of the security industry improving?
“I think the reputation of security firms is steadily improving as the business has been legitimised by Government regulation.
“I would say that the old reputation of the ‘bouncer’ is steadily in decline.”

What sets you apart from the rest?
“I would say our dedication to customer service. Unlike some of the old style door firms we will always work to our clients’ specific needs.”

What’s it like being your own boss?
“I really enjoy it. It has been a fantastic adventure chasing my ambition of owning a business.”

I worked at a venue where safety zone security was covering, they helped my nights go easier as they would deal with any issues swiftly and proffesionally mannered. Damian and his team always turned up smartly dressed and many of my customers commented on how efficiently they where greeted into the venue, with a smile and a welcoming attitude.
